Monday media

Sounds new to me:
I have one Animal Collective song, Grass. it's cool. Listen to part of Grass here (right side of the page

tour: Animal Grass tour
review: pitchfork likes, too

Flash player fun:
pandora.com
Extremely interesting music site. Very worth your time. And now, it's free.
Tech Crunch says it's what the internet was invented for. And that's not too far from the truth.

So, I play with Pandora and enter a song title that I like “One Big Holiday” by My Morning Jacket.

Pandora starts playing another My Morning Jacket song, Golden.

Why is this? Here's what Pandora tells me:

Based on what you told us so far, we're playing this track because it features
mild rhythmic syncopation, a subtle use of vocal harmony, major key tonality,
mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation and a dynamic male vocalist.

That delicious description alone makes me more willing to use Pandora often.

Once that song ends, I'm told:

From here on out, well be exploring more songs like “One Big Holiday” from My Morning Jacket.

This next song is playing because it features electric rock instrumentation, mild rhythmic syncopation, a subtle use of vocal harmony, major key tonality and repetitive melodic phrasing.

I can't wait to have a great service like this while I'm driving!

I like "Lines," it's the second song in the flash player.

podsafe music network

Quickly: Podshow.com has great free music for podcasts

The podsafe music network is a great resource for free music licensed to be used in podcasts and other online works.

In the next 24 hours or so, you can laugh at my first attempt to use ourmedia.org and Podshow.com to create an audio slideshow.

feed on this

Quickly: Use RSS to save time online

RSS -- Really Simple Syndication -- is a way to subscribe to parts or all of a site you're interested in.

For example, if you want to keep up on Cleveland news? Subscribe to the wkyc.com RSS feed. And, while you're at it -- subscribe to feeds from other Cleveland-area news outlets.

How do you subscribe?

1) Get a feed reader. If you use Google or Yahoo mail, you can set one up online. Try the Yahoo service here: my.yahoo.com

Or, download a free program. Windows users can try BlogExpress.

2) Find a feed that you're interested in. More often than not, feeds are marked with the following image: XML. On blogs, these images are often at the bottom-right of the page.

3) Copy the shortcut (link) to the feed and paste it into your feed reader.

For example, that feed for Cleveland-area news looks like this: http://www.wkyc.com/rss/rss_localnews.aspx

If I click on it using Internet Explorer 6, you get an ugly page. Try it.

But, if you paste that link into your feed reader, you'll get every headline posted about Cleveland news from Channel 3.

Why do I care?

RSS lets you keep up with information of interest quickly and easily.

Once you set up a few feeds of interest -- there's no need to return to those web sites until you find a story / link / update of interest.

No more aimlessly going to a news homepage while bored at work. Instead, you can scan headlines from dozens of sites and find articles of interest -- without hunting and pecking on individual sites.

Del.icio.us rocks!

Quickly: delicious has a mp3 player

I can't say enough about Del.icio.us.

Haven't used Del.icio.us yet?

Get going -- it's one of many social bookmark services online that allow you to not only have your important bookmarks anywhere you go online (home, work, travel) but also let you in on the zeitgeist of what's what online.

Why am I writing about Del.icio.us now? Because they've built an audio player into their webpages. While not "rock your socks off cool" to most -- this certainly is a new way to find and share interesting mp3s.

Check out the media player: del.icio.us/popular/system:filetype:mp3

HD-Day: 1200+ days to go

Senate panel sets end to analog TV broadcasts

Well, boys and girls, only 1,200 some days until your analog TV no longer works.

If I was smart, I'd set aside $1/day and then I'd be able to pick up a cheap HD TV on HD-Day.

But, I'm not smart. So, it will be no interest charges until April 7, 2010 for Michele and me.

Doppler the cat

So, spent my day off worrying about our dying cat, Doppler.

She has a red cell count of 9. 39 is normal.

Basically, she should be dead.

http://del.icio.us/dketterick/anemia

So, she's getting tested and a blood tranfusion in Akron. Or, she's dead. I'll find out Thursday.

Showbiz Show

The Showbiz Show ... five minutes in, and I already want to watch weekly.

And I don't like David Spade.

Nicely played, Comedy Central.

Also, nice to see that Greg Giraldo is getting a show. Since that douche didn't even show to his own set at Pickwick and Frolick last week. Douche.

Another reason to never visit Lousiana

"Just as dusk set in, a Gretna Sheriff showed up, jumped out of his patrol vehicle, aimed his gun at our faces, screaming, 'Get off the fucking freeway'. A helicopter arrived and used the wind from its blades to blow away our flimsy structures. As we retreated, the sheriff loaded up his truck with our food and water."

Interesting first-person account of trying to get out of New Orleans.

mini? that's not the big thing ... nano is

So, does this mean my five-month old iPod mini is obsolete?

If so -- thank you Apple, for convincing me to buy outdating coolness ... just so I could drool over the new cool as Xmas approaches.

Maybe I can convince Michele to take the mini ... so megets a Nano.

'George Bush doesn't care about black people' - MSNBC.com

Kanye West on NBC: Wow.

From MSNBC: reminded me of the “Saturday Night Live” skit where Mike Myers plays an infomercial guy who has to deal with a racist Heather Locklear. Totally different message from what Kanye said, but the look on Myers' face was the same.

Should Media Set the Community's Agenda?

Ben Compaine as Tom Paine: Should Media Set the Community's Agenda?: Corante > Rebuilding Media >

"I believe that the mass media's ability to set a common agenda for the community has been merely a side effect that arose from the technological limitation of mass media. "

A good read on this "awkward," end of mainstream media time we're in.

YesButNoButYes: SUV: Killing Americans at home and abroad

A bit ichy that the idea came from Andrew Sullivan, but nevertheless, a great idea for that stupidest of free speech outlets -- the bumper sticker.

Is nothing sacred, or, How healthy is your Chipotle?

Say it ain't so ... those damn, vegetarian Chipotle burritos that I've been downing for the past six months are absolutely horrible for me.
And I can eat two in a sitting.

As one of the greatest films of all time taught me, we must hate BigFastFood ... "Because he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly, smartass!"

Go ahead, see why your diet isn't working with the Chipotle Nutrition Facts Calculator - How healthy is your Chipotle?

Damn it, there is no fast food solution for the semi-vegetarian trying to lose weight.

Again, death to giant fast food companies.
